Alice Henry has been creating in some way or another
nearly all her life, exploring many media to satisfy her desire to
express something greater than herself. For more than 10 years, she
worked in traditional leaded and foiled glass, but began to feel
limited by the lack of dimension and interested in manipulating the
glass more. She started experimenting with fusing and slumping glass
and immediately found satisfaction. At the same time, she was
introduced to Precious Metal Clay (PMC), a material that when fired in
a kiln, becomes solid metal, .999 silver. By combining her glass work
with the fascinating technique of PMC, she has been able to create
unique and beautiful pieces, often incorporating other metals, beads,
stones, crystals, and glass as well.
Many of Alice's pieces are two-sided, giving the wearer options to fit
her mood. In addition to making wearable art, she uses a kiln to fuse
glass into plates, bowls, vases, and decorative wall art. She uses many
types of glass, but is particularly drawn to the stunning visual
effects that arise from dichroic glass. Always striving to learn new
ways to shape and manipulate glass, she is hoping to introduce a new
dimension to her current line in the form of "woven glass."
Alice finds inspiration in nature in the forms of leaves, sticks, and
animals (particularly ocean life) as well as in her faith. In addition
to practicing her art, she is a certified PMC artisan and teacher and a
trained pediatric and neonatal respiratory therapist!
